Dreaming in Waikiki

Hello all! I am here today with another poem. I went to Hawaii with my family last year, and since then I have not been quite the same. Sure, we were blessed to have tried a few new things and picked up on a little of the native language. But what stuck with me was the poetry of the places we went and things we did. A beach covered in turtles, a personal pizza by the pool, snorkeling, a luau, the best french toast I’ve ever eaten, whale watching, boat rides, reading in the mornings, waffles at midnight, pictures with parrots, spotting a humuhumunukunukuapua’a in the sea, feeding and watching birds, painting, sooo much sketching… It was magical. Of course there were ups and downs, but looking back, I really did enjoy that vacation. We went to Oahu, Maui and Kona. So… yeah. Here’s the poem.

Poolside watching birds
The wind was wrapping through my hair
I should have worn sunscreen
My skin is very fair
Laying on my belly
Feet up and in the air
Sketchbook laid before me
And I drew without a care.

I’m allergic to pineapple
But I ate it anyway
No bad reaction
It was a perfect day
The birds were perched all around me
Pecking up anything I tossed their way
A blueberry or a bit of crust
They didn’t care what I would say.

I remember turtles
Swimming in on a wave
Perching like rocks on the shore
I wish I could have explored the caves
So many natural wonders
Like the sea breeze that I craved
The stars up in the sky
And the animals that loved to misbehave.

The water was cold
And I cut my hand
Had a scar for quite a while
But didn’t want to return to land
In the water I was weightless
Flying high or swimming low
In the water there’s no limit
Of how far or deep you can go.

I went to a Luau
Tried lots of new foods
The natives wore grass skirts
(Even the dudes!!)
The main entertainer made a mistake
He tried to point me out
He asked me to “Chee-hu”
When I said “no” he almost gave a pout.

We ate at Huggo’s multiple times
Best french toast in the world
Had the most amazing waitress
As the ocean beside us swirled
A purple edible orchid
Graced the top of every plate
So special and so kind
Would have been a beautiful feel for a date.

Took a guided tour
We went all over the place
We saw oceans and forests
The most calming space
We saw a green sea turtle on a black sand beach
And got lost on a trail
We saw ferns all curled up
They looked like tails!

I learned about volcanoes
And the havoc they can wreck
Saw a place where lava was
Never know where it could have gone next
We went back to the city
I held a parrot on my shoulder
It ate the back of my earring
And I suddenly didn’t feel so much older.

We took a boat ride
Out into the ocean
Put on some gear
It was a nice relaxing notion
I didn’t see much
That is okay
Fell asleep to an islands song on the way back
The perfect ending… to a perfect day.
(Then we went and ate at Huggo’s again.)

I got so much sketching done on this trip and painted a few things in watercolor. It was a blast and I’m so glad I went. At first I REALLY didn’t want to, because I’m a homebody and honestly, I kind of hate the beach. It’s always so hot, I get sunburns faster than you can say “ginger”, and it’s always packed with people. Plus…

But it truly wasn’t that bad. I had fun. 🙂
Thanks for reading! I hope I improved your day somehow, and that it just gets better and better!

(This is the song I fell asleep to on the way back from the snorkeling tour. It was so calming that I recorded a little to find it again later. With the sound of the boat flowing over the water and the people talking around me, it was the perfect setting for a nap.) ♡

♡, Shortie
